Rio de Janeiro Time Zone Information

Rio de Janeiro is on Greenwich Mean Time - 3.  New York City is on GMT - 5, so when both countries are on Standard Time, noon in New York City, is 2:00 PM in Rio.  However, this happens only for a few days a year, because both countries also switch to Daylight Savings Time for the summer.  Here is where it gets tricky.  When It is Spring in Rio, it is Fall in New York, so Rio adds an hour for Daylight Savings Time when New York is about to return to Standard Time.  As a result of this, the time difference between New York and Rio can actually be anywhere from one hour to three hours, depending on the time of year.  To complicate matters even more, the change to Daylight Savings Time is a matter of legislation, so the dates can change from time to time.
